Marketing & the calendar

A stage race lives on its field and its story. Both come down to two things done well: picking a date that doesn't fight the rest of gravel, and launching in a way that makes riders want in before they know the course.

Pick the date first

The date decides who can come and who covers it. The high country only opens once the passes melt out, which puts the window roughly July through September. Inside that window, work around the anchors of the gravel calendar rather than against them.

EventRough windowWhy it matters
Unbound Gravel (Kansas)Early JuneThe sport's biggest one-day race; don't sit on top of it.
SBT GRVL (Steamboat, CO)Late summerThe Colorado gravel anchor; a natural sibling, not a rival, if spaced.
Leadville Trail 100Mid-AugustHome turf. Ride its gravity by placing near it, not on it.

A strong option is to run adjacent to the Leadville Race Series so riders can build a whole Leadville trip around it, while leaving enough space that neither event fights the other for crews and lodging. Confirm the current calendar before locking a date; these move year to year.

The pro layer: the Life Time Grand Prix orbit

The Life Time Grand Prix is the series that organizes the top American off-road pros' seasons across gravel and marathon MTB. You don't need to be on it to matter, but understanding it helps: a date and format that let Grand Prix contenders justify the trip pulls a pro field, and a pro field pulls media and photography. Even as an independent event, court the athletes and their sponsors early.

Media & photography

Gravel is a visual sport and the high country is the reason. Invest first-year money in strong photography and a short film. Those assets do more to sell the second edition than any ad. Give the cycling press (Velo, Escape Collective, Cyclingnews, the gravel podcasts) a real story: a new stage race on the highest gravel in the country, with a general classification the discipline has never had.

The founding-year launch

  • Announce with the vision and the course, not a countdown clock. Riders commit to a place and a challenge.
  • Founding-rider pricing or a limited founders' cohort rewards the people who sign up before proof exists.
  • Lottery or cap — if demand outruns the permit-limited field, a registration lottery both protects the field size and signals demand (the majors all use one).
  • Ambassadors — a handful of respected gravel riders who ride it and tell people. Worth more than paid reach.
  • Stay-and-ride packaging — the lodge and Leadville lodging bundled with entry; the basecamp is a marketing asset, not just logistics.
